English mandrel

The mandrel is a specialised lathe, used mainly for turning watch plates, setting jewels and similar operations.

F.W. Britten in his famous book "Watch and Clockmakers' Handbook, Dictionary and Guide" writes: "A good mandrel with slide rest is one of the most perfect tools a watchmaker can possess".

The English mandrel is driven by a leather belt from a handwheel (compare with the Swiss model exhibit 13-02).The compound slide is mounted on a flat bed and there is no tailstock.
