The Ipswich & District Branch of the BHI presents a wide range of talks, discussions and visits in the course of each year.

Visitors are always welcome

February 26

AGM followed by Ian Coote

"Dublin Turret Clocks"

Ian Coote MBHI is a clock repairer, now semi-retired. He has taken a keen interest in turret clocks for many years, and is secretary of the AHS Turret Clock Group as well as diocesan Clocks adviser to the dioceses of Chelmsford and St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. In 2017 he organised a clock tour of Dublin for the AHS, upon which this talk is based.

There are numerous public clocks in the city of Dublin although many of the movements have been replaced by electrical installations. This talk is about some of the remaining mechanical clocks and their makers.

Included are the oldest flatbed clock in the British Isles; the Earl of Meath's extraordinary precision water clock, built from scrap; Benson's "Great Clock", the last remaining in the world; innovative escapements and much, much more.

March 26

Peter Grimwood

"Orreries - Telling the time in years"

At Bramford Village Hall.

Peter Grimwood is a graduate mechanical engineer who has also taken the Grad BHI examination. In 2005 he wrote and published a Restorer's guide for Moon mechanisms in Long-case clocks. Using the skills developed in long-case restoration he started designing and making orreries in the mid 1990's. This gradually developed into a business and he now runs Orreries UK producing a small range of models plus 'one-offs' for individual clients. The talk tonight will include what orreries are, how long they have been about, what they do (and what they don't do), how clockmaking skills are used to make them, and how to go about making your own.
